Services in the Season of Advent

Services in the Season of Advent

It is the season of Advent as we await the birth of Jesus and start of a new liturgical calendar.  Here is the schedule of Advent services at Haydenville Congregational Church.

We will continue to meet next door in the auditorium of the Town Office Building, 141 Main Street, until further notice. The auditorium is on the second floor and there is an elevator.

Other than Dec. 2 and Dec. 24, all services begin at 10 a.m. Town Offices will be open 30 minutes before service. There is no coffee hour while we are worshipping in the Town Office Building.

The choir will be signing and there will be readings and a lighting of candles associated with the Advent Wreath leading up to Christmas.

December 2, 2 p.m. First Sunday in Advent. Rev. Dr. Peter Ives. The Hope candle will be lit.

December 9.   Second Sunday of Advent: Carole Bull. The Peace candle will be lit.

December 16. Third Sunday of Advent. We will light the Joy candle and there will be a Christmas Pageant. Andrew Geery and other church members who work with our children are planning a pageant different from the “instant pageant” of the last few years. Instead, the children will be doing a pageant that is a little more structured. It would include readings, carols and an acting out of scenes from the Christmas story as told in the gospel of Luke.

December 23. Fourth Sunday of Advent: Annie Turner will offer a sermon on Mary the mother of Jesus. The Love candle will be lit.

December 24.  Christmas Eve, 7 p.m.  Rev. Dr. Peter Ives will lead Christmas Eve worship and the lighting of the Christ candle. The choir is preparing special music for the service. Our traditional singing of “Silent Night” by candlelight will be held  but it is BYOBC — bring your own battery-operated candle.

A Blue Christmas Service is being discussed, possibly for Thursday, Dec. 20. Time and location to be determined.
